online now
« on: July 24, 2008, 03:10:32 PM »
i was curious how accurate the "online or not online" is when viewing myspace profile on your site? and also will it show someone online that usually hides in on myspace? usually it does show the online now icon blinking on your site when they are online (the ones who keep it viewable) but today i noticed somone was not online (or the icon was not showing) but on your site it said online!

also....people that i know keep it hidden on myspace it was showing that they were online on your site (not the icon, just the words "online")

sorry if sounds like a bunch of confusion but mainly just curious how accurate it is.

i am new to this forum so i apologize if i posted this in the wrong place.

I will check this out, Myspace has been updating their pages lately, so I'm not sure whether they changed the way that they display whether a user is online.

Just to give you some information:
The scripts SHOULD show when a user that has NOT disabled the option to appear online in the options is online. For example, if you have a friend who IS online and you can see the person in the "People Online Now" section in your Inbox, then the scripts will show that person as online if they have tried to hide the "Online Now" icon on their profile using some HTML or CSS.

The short answer: If the person has disabled the ability to display their online status in their options, then, no, the scripts will never display them as online.

I am having the same issue. It will show a user as on line when that user is definitely not on line and their last login date hasn't changed.

I will try to give an example. The last login date shows 7/25 both on myspace and your site. But for the last month your site has showed this person on line and offline at various times through the day, every day. This is on a page with no code to change the date and with the on line status not hidden.

I started doing some tests and I am wondering if its possible your site will sometimes show the person as on line when a person on their friends list is on.  I found that if a user comes up as on line but their date hasn't changed here or on myspace and their status shows offline on myspace... one of their friends is signed on. When that friend signs off... your site shows the user I'm watching as signed off too. If another of their friends signs on... they pop up as on line on your site. And again off when their friend signs off.

I hope that wasn't too confusing.  ???

I'm pretty sure that it's figuring out their online status based on their friends list too. Thanks for pointing that out.

Great, thank you for the confirmation. ;D

So ww96...   If the date hasn't changed like you said and it shows them as on line, check their friends list as its probably one of their friends triggering it.

ok this thing is driving me nuts lol! unfortunatley i dont think that theory is right....wish it was! i created a profile with no friends and even deleted tom....i then looked up my profile numerous times by refreshing page...logging in on phone...or logged on comp.....even waiting for the little blinky thing to go off on myspace (which stays on for awhile even if your not online)....the online status would switch from online to not online back and forth over and over after refreshing page....i dont know....also noticed status no longer shows nor does friends...might be posted somewhere else already...just given a heads up :)

This is the same to which I am experiencing. I know the user has the online status as hidden and when I refresh the page it shows this person from offline to online and as soon as I refresh it it goes the other way. Mine was hidden and it did the same with mine as well.

I found this happened to me today as well. Last login said Nov 14th but when I looked it said he was online. Another person from his profile also showed online and her login status reflected that. Once she signed out and went offline, his did as well.

So you are saying that his online was sorta piggybacking hers?

I have another friend who has her availability turned off but it always shows her as online when she is. I thought that it would show offline regardless.

Yes, I am new to all this stuff as well!!

OMG I'm glad I read this. I've been tracking 2 friends who always seem to be online and offline at the same time, even though the blinky icon doesn't display on their actual page when HITS says they are online, and I know one of them doesn't disable this. But I found some of the times they were both online to be implausible, esp as I was sitting next to one of them when he was supposedly online. I was about to start accusing him of something but I'm glad I didn't now. The idea that the HITS online status is triggered by their friends being online makes a lot of sense from what I've noticed. I've also noticed that sometimes when someone is online per MyspaceIM that their HITS status also says online, even though they aren't logged in to their myspace page. If I come up with any other patterns I'll post them here. Otherwise guess I'll just wait and see.

I have added a fix for this. Please reply if you encounter the same problem again.
